Connection Strings using Microsoft ODBC for Oracle for connections to Oracle.
I'm trying to connect Oracle database from Excel VBA, but got some run time error and figured out that 'Microsoft ODBC for Oracle' is missing in 'ODBC Data Source Administrator' under 'Drivers' tab.
- Instant Client Downloads for Microsoft Windows 32-bit. See the Instant Client Home Page for more information about Instant Client. The installation instructions are at the foot of the page. Client-server version interoperability is detailed in Doc ID 207303.1.For example, Oracle Call Interface 18.3 can connect to Oracle Database 11.2 or later.
- The Oracle ODBC Driver enables ODBC applications on Microsoft Windows, as well as UNIX platforms like Linux, Solaris, and IBM Advanced Interactive eXecutive (AIX) read and write access to Oracle® databases through the ODBC interface using Oracle Net Services software.
Under 'Drivers' tab I could see only 'SQL Server' - so do I need to install 'Microsoft ODBC for Oracle' manually? Because I thought that 'Microsoft ODBC for Oracle' should have got installed by default with OS. Is my assumption wrong here? If so please confirm and also let me know which application would install that driver by default.. because I have never faced this issue in most of the client machines... so bit confused here.. please help.

@v-yuezhe-msft Apologies for getting back so late but I found a solution for this to work. New Query connect to DB Oracle Database in the servername the syntax to use is 'hostname:port number /SID' which I was using only as host ID.After this update, it all worked fine. Thanks again for the help. I have an old 32-bit software program that connects to an Oracle database but only works with the Microsoft ODBC driver for Oracle. It does not work with the more up-to-date native Oracle ODBC driver. I have installed the Oracle Instant Client (32-bit and 64-bit versions on my 64-bit Win 7 PC), each into different ORACLEHOME directories. The ODBC Driver for Oracle User's Guide is intended to complement the setup help that can be accessed through the ODBC Data Source Administrator. This section contains the following topics. Driver Version Scheme. Installing the Software. Oracle Software Patches. Adding and Modifying Data Sources Using Setup. Testing the ODBC Connection.
Yes you will need to install, if it isn't already present. Microsoft don't recommend using their ODBC Driver for Oracle, anymore.
This feature will be removed in a future version of Windows. Avoid using this feature in new development work, and plan to modify applications that currently use this feature. Instead, use the ODBC driver provided by Oracle.
Source.
Instead use the Oracle driver.

Which 'ODBC Data Source Administrator' do you use? 32-bit or 64-bit? If your Excel is 32-bit (which is most likely the case) you also have to use 32-bit ODBC Data Sources.
Start
%SYSTEMROOT%SysWOW64odbcad32.exe
to launch the 32-bit version.Note, ODBC driver for Oracle from Microsoft supports only 32-bit, 64-bit is not available. As already mentioned it is deprecated and should not be used for new projects.
